The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is to launch a pilot scheme providing financial support to make properties more flood-resistant and resilient.

According to Defra, "in excess of £2m" will be spent on the pilot projects in the hope of finding ways to improve the integration of drainage and flood risk management practices in urban areas.

The pilot, announced this week, will in particular look at areas "where flood alleviation schemes cannot be justified".

Defra said the pilot makes up part of the initial response to the government's long term flood and coastal erosion risk management strategy, developed in response to the 'Making Space for Water' consultation paper published in July 2004.
