Catastrophe modelling company Eqecat has upped its estimates of the insured losses from Hurricane Katrina, making its total insured loss estimate range $26bn to $43bn.

In addition, Eqecat said it was too soon to predict how much damage would be caused by Hurricane Rita but that the company was likely to have preliminary estimates available during the next couple of days.

Eqecat president Richard Clinton said: “Right now, it is playing out to be a very major event."
