Six men from Railtrack and Balfour Beatty appeared in court on Monday to face charges of manslaughter over the October 2000 Hatfield rail disaster, in which four people were killed.

Railtrack successor Network Rail and Balfour Beatty, also face charges of corporate manslaughter. If found guilty, the men could face life imprisonment and the companies could be hit with unlimited fines.

But Alan Millband, a partner with Weightman Vizards' regulatory advice unit, said under current corporate manslaughter legislation the chances of a prosecution were not high.

He said failure to gain convictions could pressure the government to rush through its Corporate Killing Bill.
