The insurance arm of HBOS today declared end of year pre-tax profits of £485m, 9% up from last year's £445m.

Premium income also increased by 9%, to £1.73bn from £1.59bn in 2003.

Household and travel lines contributed premium incomes of £476m, an increase of 12% from £437m in 2003, demonstrating the strength of the Halifax brand, HBOS said.

Premium sales of repayment insurance, under both the Halifax brand and third party business, increased by 1% to £875m.

Chief executive of HBOS General Insurance, Howard Posner, said: “It is our strength in product design and service delivery that will continue to ensure the future growth of our business.”

The wider group, HBOS PLC, reported net profits of £3.06bn, a 25% improvement on 2003's £2.45bn.
