We salute Peter David's faith. The devout Christian has claimed that he does not need car insurance because he has “divine protection”.

The lay preacher from Neath, South Wales, appeared in front of magistrates last week, charged with driving without insurance, MOT, road tax and with an unlicensed number plate.

David pleaded not guilty at the preliminary hearing and will appear again in May.

He told newspapers: “I shall be telling the court that the Lord told me I didn't need insurance and that that assurance is my divine protection. I've been licensed from heaven and I'll be giving the word of the Lord in court.”

His licence plate is DEUT 818, in reference to the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 8, Verse 18, which says God gives power.

Local police would not comment on the case.
