Independent's chief Michael Bright has declared himself bankrupt, with debts running into millions of pounds.

Bright petitioned for bankruptcy after it became apparent his liabilities outweighed his assets, sources said.

"He has taken voluntary bankruptcy, rather than face the ignomy of going through the courts," a source said. HSBC has sued the former chief executive for an estimated £4.3m.
