An insurance conman has been jailed for five-and-a-half years for fraud and arson after an investigation by Cunningham Lindsey.

Elliot Ross was the boss of Floor Coverings Limited, a Liverpool carpet warehouse which burned down in August 2009.

The loss to the warehouse was valued at £330,000, and the blaze also seriously damaged three neighbouring businesses.

After the fire Ross made a claim, and Cunningham Lindsey Investigation Services was brought in.

Ross had increased the sums insured a few weeks before the fire, and a Cunningham Lindsey accountant found that the business was in debt.

The Fire Brigade and Police moved in alongside Cunningham Lindsey.

Forensic staff found the remains of two disposable barbeques in the debris. A third was found nearby, stuffed with cardboard and toilet rolls as fuel.

“Debt was a clear motive and 25 separate pieces of evidence were found, clearly linking Mr Ross with the fire, including the purchase of the barbeques, matches and a bottle of white spirit,” said Cunningham Lindsey Investigation Services major loss investigator Phil Scales. “We did not hesitate to share the additional information we had gathered with the Police, which led to Mr Ross’s prosecution.”

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court found Ross guilty after a four-week trial.
