Markel creates new product for the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) industry.

Markel International, has expanded its footprint in the professional liability sector with the launch of a medical malpractice product aimed at the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) industry.

Markel’s complementary and alternative medicine malpractice insurance is intended to cover UK therapists against risks including medical malpractice, public and products liability, ‘Good Samaritan’ acts and sexual harassment defence costs.

The insurer said the product's launch was in response to a growing demand for cover fuelled by a burgeoning compensation culture in the UK, together with association bodies using compulsory or scheme insurance as a means of improving the professional image of their therapies.

David Jones, managing director of Markel International’s Professional Liability division, said: “With statutory regulation threatening to extend to other CAM therapies, this industry is in need of a tailored product that will cover them against every eventuality.

"Although the UK market will be our primary market initially, we have the capacity to extend this product to other territories such as Spain and Italy.”

The type of therapy covered include acupressure, the Alexander technique, applied kinesiology, aromatherapy, sports massage and yoga therapy.
