’We feel now that the market’s matured,’ says head

Aegis London has hired a new underwriting team in a bid to strengthen its position in the cyber market.

The move will see Daniel Johnson and Lydia Lambert join the Lloyd’s syndicate, with them having responsibility for growing the cyber portfolio.

Johnson will take up the role of class underwriter for cyber and will report to Ben Lockwood, Aegis London’s head of specialty underwriting.

Lambert, meanwhile, will take up the role of cyber underwriter.

Lockwood said his firm was putting more focus on cyber as it felt the market had matured.

“In Dan and Lydia, I believe we’ve found the right individuals to craft a sensible, robust and profitable cyber portfolio for Aegis London that’s sustainable across the insurance cycle,” he added.

“Although we’ve not had a dedicated cyber team since 2015, we’ve been watching the market with great interest, in part because we’ve been involved in a number of cyber binders and consortia.

”We feel now that the market’s matured, learned some hard lessons and begun to find some sort of equilibrium as an important part of the wider Lloyd’s market. Underwriters’ ability to assess price and aggregate risk has also come on by leaps and bounds, which gives us confidence in the class.”

Experience

Both appointees will join the firm from AIG.

Lambert joined AIG in 2012 as a graduate underwriter and was most recently the major accounts cyber team leader.

Johnson, meanwhile, held a number of cyber underwriting roles before moving to broker Aon in 2020.

He subsequently rejoined AIG, with him having most recently led its UK cyber and technology team.

“As a class underwriter, Aegis London provides me with the stable, profitable, long-term focused platform necessary to build a strong portfolio,” Johnson said.

”The cyber market provides an attractive opportunity for Aegis London to strategically diversify its specialty classes.”
