A new leadership structure is being finalised

Antares has announced that Ahmed El Tabbakh will take on the interim leadership of the firm following the passing of Michael van der Straaten.

der Straaten had more than 40 years’ experience in the industry, starting out his career as an assistant underwriter.

He later became chief executive for Qatar Insurance Company’s European reinsurance arm, leading its transformation into Antares. He became chief executive at Antares in 2020.

On 14 July 2026, Antares announced that der Straaten passed away following a short illness.

It has now confirmed that El Tabbakh, group chief business officer for international at QIC, will become the firm’s new leader on a temporary basis.

In a statement, Antares said: ”Following Monday’s statement about the passing of Antares’ chief executive der Straaten, it is announced that El Tabbakh, group chief business officer for international at QIC, Antares’ parent company, will take on the interim leadership of the Antares businesses in the short-term, while a new leadership structure is finalised.”
