Company president believes new hire’s skill set will enable him to ‘hit the ground running’

Markel International, a subsidiary of Markel Corporation, has hired former XL Catlin insurance chief executive for UK and Ireland Andrew McMellin as managing director of its wholesale division, effective from 17 January 2022.

In this London-based role, McMellin will use his market knowledge and relationships to help Markel International grow its Lloyd’s platform and build its presence in other key wholesale specialty markets. He will also support system and process simplification projects.

McMellin will report to Simon Wilson, president of Markel International, once his appointment has gained regulatory approval.

Hit the ground running

McMellin has more than 30 years of industry experience in specialty insurance. Most recently, he worked as group chief executive at Pioneer Underwriters.

Prior to this, he was insurance chief executive for UK and Ireland at XL Catlin.

Speaking on the appointment, Wilson said: “Andrew brings a breadth of experience and relationships that will allow him to hit the ground running here at Markel.

“His ambitious spirit matches our own and I am confident that he will play a leading role in helping Markel scale [its] international operations.”

McMellin added: “I am thrilled to join such a well-respected company with ambitious plans for the future.

“Markel has integrity and talent - I’m confident that with both, we can lead the wholesale markets in which we operate.”
