’I look forward to working closely with him as we build on our best underwriting performance in a decade,’ says chief executive

(Re)insurer MS Amlin has appointed Martin Burke as its chief underwriting officer on a permanent basis.

Burke took up the role on an interim basis following Grant Baxter stepping down from the position in October 2023.

In a LinkedIn post yesterday (19 March 2024), MS Amlin said it was promoting Burke as he had been ”instrumental in our recent return to significant profitability”.

The firm’s latest trading update, which was published on 12 March 2024, showed that operating profit increased to £256.8m in 2023 from a prior year loss of £46.7m – a swing of more than £300m.

It also secured a combined ratio (COR) of 86.6% during the year, an improvement from the 96.2% recorded in 2022.

Andrew Carrier, chief executive of MS Amlin, said: “I’m delighted to confirm Martin’s appointment as permanent CUO.

”I look forward to working closely with Martin as we build on our best underwriting performance in a decade to achieve consistent, profitable growth.”

Experience

Burke joined MS Amlin in 2012 and has held several senior roles with the (re)insurer since then.

This includes deputy group chief risk officer, director of group underwriting and director of underwriting services.

”Martin is a skilled leader with extensive Lloyd’s market experience [and] deep technical expertise,” Carrier said.

“[He has] the strategic focus required to drive our underwriting strategy forward at pace.”
