The appointment will be finalised with the closing of the Marsh/JLT deal

Marsh-owned global consulting firm Mercer has announced that Bala Viswanathan will be its new chief operating officer.

Viswanathan is currently chief executive of JLT’s UK & Ireland employee benefits division, and his new appointment will become effective on completion of Marsh buying JLT.

Viswanathan will report to Mercer president and chief executive Julio Portalatin and also become a member of Mercer’s global executive leadership team.

As chief operating officer, Viswanathan will work across Mercer to drive enhancements to the company’s offshore, technology and systems capabilities as well as client satisfaction and user experiences.

Prior to his current role, Viswanathan served as JLT’s chief operating officer and has a long track record of leading global business operations.

“Pending the outcome of the regulatory process, we look forward to welcoming Bala to Mercer in this strategically important role,” said Portalatin. “His successful career at JLT and his understanding of both operations and the global employee benefits market will further enhance our industry leadership, client relationships and organizational effectiveness. He will be a valued addition to Mercer’s executive team.”

“I look forward to taking on the chief operating officer role at Mercer and adding my perspective and insights to the strategic direction and success of the firm,” added Viswanathan.
