Employees who use the internet are increasingly becoming news addicts, a survey has found.

In its annual survey, web monitor company Websense found that more than 20% of employees felt that news was the most addictive content on the web.

One of the reasons for this was that only 4% of companies block access to news sites, it said.

Websense chief technology officer Harold Kester said: "Initially we saw most abuse in pornography and gambling sites, now we are seeing more time spent on news sites."

However they warned that un-monitored surfing is costing business millions. A company where 1000 employees surf the web for just one hour a day will lose £30m each year in lost productivity, it said.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
