AXA, Zurich, esure and Admiral are combating the £4bn lost each year in fraudulent personal injury claims by backing a new industry database.

The database, called CUE PI (Claims & Underwriting Exchange Personal Injury/Illness), was launched last week by Insurance Database Services (IDSL).

The scheme enables insurers to identify potentially fraudulent claims by checking claimants' past records.

Allianz Cornhill, NFU and Fortis are expected to join the scheme next month.

It is estimated that personal injury claims cost the industry around £4bn per year. IDSL executive Mark Richardson said: "If by using CUE PI, insurers can avoid paying out on a few large fraudulent personal injury claims, they will have got their money back."

Insurers contribute data to CUE PI through one of two suppliers, CRIF Decision Solutions and Experian.

Richardson said: "Each member insurer negotiates a fee with their chosen supplier and the suppliers take a cut of each transaction."
