QBE has approached Biba to endorse its proposed protocols to help brokers reduce their exposure to professional indemnity (PI) claims.

The insurer has devised a risk management framework to assist brokers identify deficiencies in their business practices and potential risk areas.

It is currently engaged in a trial with broker FirstCity to assess the effectiveness of the protocols.

FirstCity has been testing the product, which was based on quality assurance processes QBE developed for the solicitors' PI market, during the past 18 months.

Mark Casady, QBE PI portfolio manager, said: "I visualise that we will be in a position to launch a product for brokers next year."

Biba said it supported the principle, although this did not equate to an endorsement.

A Biba spokesman said QBE was the first insurer to approach with a practical initiative that "struck at the heart" of what Biba wanted to achieve when it launched a PI scheme for brokers in April.

He added: "We expect more initiatives presented from other insurers to be presented in the new year."
