One of the yacht insurance fraternity's best-known and liked brokers, Peter Dove, has sailed into retirement.

Dove was most recently the maritime consultant at Navigators & General Insurance and will continue to develop Navigators' presence on the south coast from his home office in Fareham.

Navigators director Rod Daniel said Dove's many friends in the marine industry would no doubt continue to see him at boat shows and “the odd regatta beer tent”.

Dove started working life as a 16-year-old apprentice at Portsmouth Dockyard and, after learning sail making, boat and mast building, worked for at least ten different marine companies.

He set up a highly successful marine brokerage called Dove & Butler with John Butler in April 1986, founding excellent relationships with dealers, marinas, boating associations and private yacht owners, as well as Navigators as an insurer.

Dove & Butler sold the company to Jardines' Southampton office in July 1994.

Dove stayed on as manager of the yacht division until Jardines' refocused the business and he moved to Navigators.
