A health and safety group with the backing of MPs in Scotland and Westminster is to be launched in Scotland today.

The committee, which has the working title of Health & Safety Committee for Scotland, will co-ordinate the work of stakeholders involved in improving health and safety in the workplace.

The group aims to target improvements through better integrated information and intelligence on health and safety performance, it said.

It has also been charged with responsibility of co-ordinating an action plan to implement the Health & Safety Commission's Strategy for workplace health and safety to 2010 and beyond in Scotland.

The forum said it would not infringe on the reserved status of health and safety legislation, but it would improve its implementation and effectiveness on the ground by working closely with devolved strategies such as the Scottish Executive's healthy working lives.
