The Accident Group (TAG) owes more than £11m in unpaid tax and National Insurance (NI) contributions, according to reports.

The claims firm is understood to have stopped paying its employees' income tax and NI contributions since January, despite deducting them from the staff payroll.

A spokesman for the company's administrators, PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: "We are aware that the Inland Revenue may have a claim."

The revelation is the latest that has come to light since TAG went into administration. Mark Langford, the company's founder, has gone to ground and other directors have not been contactable.

Bryan Slater, a solicitor who is representing ex-TAG staff said Rowe Cohen, the law firm that was used to vet the validity of the company's 'no-win, no-fee' claims, was instructed in April "to ignore criteria on vetting so that as many claims as possible could be put through". A spokesman for Rowe Cohen refused to comment.

HBOS, the bank that underwrote the costs of the personal injury claims, said it was reassured by TAG on the validity of its claims.

Former workers from the company are to meet tonight in Liverpool to discuss the situation with trade unions, local MPs and Mr Slater.
