Re Anthony Hilton's opinion (Comment, 19 April), I would argue that spending money on carbon reduction is not akin to paying an insurance premium, but more like standing on a sinking ship and tying helium party balloons to the funnel. It might help but more "logical" and "prudent" to get the lifeboats ready.

While it is vital that the insurance industry is involved in the debate, surely a better example to government, business and individuals would be a funeral expenses plan. Accepting that global warming is happening, let us first invest in preparing for the consequences before shelling out on unproven medicines.
