Insurers could replace jobs in budget cuts to public sector

David Stevens, chief operating officer of Admiral, Wales’ largest quoted company, says Wales needs another five companies like it to absorb the public sector jobs cuts expected after the budget, the FT reports.

He said: “It is depressingly inevitable that over the next few years Wales will struggle economically because it is so reliant on public-sector employment, and that will be depressed by the correction of budgetary balances.”

Admiral is raising staff numbers in south Wales from 3,000 to more than 3,500, but Stevens said “another four or five Admirals” are needed.

“The further you get from London, the harder it gets, and that is a powerful feature of the UK economy,” Mr Stevens said.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
