History: CNA was founded in 1897, with headquarters based in Chicago, Illinois. The company is now one of the largest insurance organisations in the United States with assets in excess of $67bn. It is also among the world's largest writers of property and casualty insurance.

Globally, CNA provides businesses and individuals with a broad range of insurance products and risk management services. Insurance lines include property, casualty, financial, marine, and accident. CNA products and services are distributed through agents, intermediaries, and brokers.

In Europe, CNA operates through two UK-domiciled insurance companies: CNA Insurance Company (formerly known as Maritime Insurance Company) and CNA Insurance Company (Europe). These two Standard and Poor's A-rated companies are due to be merged during 2003.

Chief officer: Keith Davies

Biography: Davies, chief executive of CNA Insurance, has been involved in international business activities for nearly 30 years and the insurance industry in particular for the last 10 years. In the early 1970s he was an economist with Lloyds Bank International, specialising in Latin America and Europe.

Admitted in 1976, Keith Davies was with the City law firm, Lovell White Durrant, before establishing his own practice in Paris and Brussels; to this he brought clients such as Mars, Boeing, Smith Kline Beecham, Bacardi, Ernst & Whinney and British Airways.

In 1989, he was made the international partner for the City law firm, Lawrence Graham, and began developing an insurance clientele that included Chubb and Aon. Chubb asked him, in 1993, to become the president and director general of its operation in France; he was made senior vice president for Europe in 1997 with specific responsibility for marketing and development. He joined CNA in 1998 as executive vice president and managing director of CNA Global Resource Managers.
