Dr Sandy Scott, the new director-general of the Chartered Insurance Institute used to be a major in the army. You'd never guess.

When Insurance Times said it was bringing a photographer to get some pics of the great man, he made it clear that he was giving the orders and no picture would be available until after Insurance Times had gone to press last week. And, even then, Scott was adamant that only the official photos could be used.

Backchat couldn't help singing:

I am the very model of a modern director general,

I hold a rank important and should be treated venerable,

I know the different types of underwriting and their meanings allegorical,

From aviation to zoological in order categorical

I'm well acquainted too with matters mathematical

I understand the claims standard, both simple and erratical,

About loss adjusting theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,

So I fail to understand why I should be given such abuse.
