Light-fingered apes will make a monkey out of insurers.

The people of Gibraltar have to hide more than their bananas from the naughty Barbary Macaques – commonly called Barbary apes – that share the small territory.

The brazen monkeys have taken to nicking wallets, cameras and other goods from the residents’ homes, Backchat learned during a trip to the Rock. Luckily for the residents, their home contents insurance is likely to cover theft by all types of primates.

It’s hard to imagine what a monkey would want with a wallet. But judging by the humanised and big-bellied Barbary Macaques in Gibraltar, they are likely to be spending the contents on crisps or chocolate from their local store.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
