Biba said it has introduced a data protection scheme for its members.

It said the scheme would help brokers handle personal data in a compliant manner, design and implement HR practices, store client information, and understand requirements relating to canvassing their client base.

Although most organisations are affected by the Data Protection Act 1998, Biba said most companies did not fully appreciate that it prevents them from continuing to process personal information they hold unless that processing can be justified under one of the conditions sat out in the Act.

Biba technical services manager Graeme Trudgill, said: “Because of the complexity of the Act it can be a minefield for brokers.

“That's why we have also developed a practical guide which explains the issues faced by brokers when interpreting this maze of legal requirements.”

It said the scheme would be provided through Amtec Consulting.
