Volunteer groups to buy public liability policies for £10

David Cameron wants a cheap, national public liability insurance scheme to protect individuals keen to take part in his Big Society voluntary activities, the Telegraph reports.

He has told members of the Big Society Network of volunteers that he would work with the insurance industry to create a national Big Society insurance policy covering those taking part in projects.

Communities would pay between £5 and £10 a month for the certificates, which would then indemnify volunteers taking part in local schemes.

Insurers stand ready

The Association of British Insurers (ABI), said: “We would always be happy to work with the Government to see how the private sector could work with the public to better protect themselves. We stand ready to discuss with the Government any ideas they might have.”

Emma Harrison, a member of the Big Society Network, said: “For small self help groups to buy public liability insurance for £10 allows them to get on and do what they want to do. At the moment, people are terrified of getting sued – that’s all got to stop. People need to know that they are covered.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
