When I read Alex Couper of Cheaper Car Insurance Services' letter (Insurance Times 18 April) about his altercations with HML and in particular Mr Boot, I felt somebody should respond.

I do not have any particular axe to grind, but I have dealt with Rodney Boot for 30 years and have always been most grateful for the assistance and support he has given to us and to many others, even in difficult times.

Reading between the lines of Mr Couper's letter, he has attempted to come into the industry without a track record, expecting to make money fast.

He then failed to get agencies and having spent a good deal of money setting up the business, seemed to be on a rapid downward spiral with staff being laid off and minimal sales.

Whatever decision Mr Boot took, I am certain it was not taken lightly, and if Mr Couper has any knowledge of how insurance companies work and think, he would know most of them would be reluctant to deal with a company called Cheaper Car Insurance Services in the first place.
