Unum is offering independent financial advisers an additional 12% in commission to help boost sales of income protection insurance.

The “market expansion bonus” is available to IFAs on all new group income protection schemes they sell before the end of the year, and is designed to help cover initial set-up costs.

Additionally, Unum are hitting the road, staging a series of seminars to raise awareness of the benefits of income protection insurance.

“We need to take the income protection story to individuals and companies who may not be familiar with the issues,” explained Eugene McCormack, Unum's marketing director.

“Surprising as it sounds, 90% of the working population is not covered by income protection insurance,” he added.

The income protection insurer's efforts to “expand this largely untapped market” follow the Health and Safety Executive survey, that put stress and back pain as the UK's biggest occupational health issues and major causes of lost work hours.

“The findings of this research are disturbing as they highlight the scale of the problem facing UK businesses,” McCormack added.

The road show is making its way round the UK now.
