Capita won 57 new contracts or extensions across the insurance industry, with its London market business and outsourcing areas performing particularly strongly, it said.

Capita's turnover increased 20% to £1.08bn in the 12 months ending 31 December 2003, up from £898m for 2002, said the group.

Market conditions remained very challenging in loss adjusting, said Capita, leading to depressed volumes of business.

Operating profit before goodwill amortisation rose 22% to £131m, up from £107m in 2002, while pretax profits grew by 23% from £98.3m in 2002 to £121m.

2004 started positively for the company with a contract to administer all miners' personal injury liability claims, on behalf of the DTI, relating to chronic pulmonary disease and vibration white finger.
