Hurricane Felix has intensified into a category 5 hurricane, with wind speeds up to 155mph

A category 5 hurricane, Felix, is smashing through the Caribbean Sea on a path toward Central America, where forecasters said it could make landfall as a "potentially catastrophic" storm.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall in three days time near Belize City. There is still a chance that the super hurricane could make landfall on the coast of Honduras.

Once it makes landfall, Felix is expected to lose some strength as it moves across land before entering the Gulf of Mexico. However, according to Tropical Storm Risk, it is still likely to be a category 4 storm when it enters the Gulf.

At present, TSR expects it to make a second landfall as a category 2 strength storm on the Mexico coast near Tampico, to the north of Mexico City.
