Churchill has announced three new travel insurance contracts in its pursuit of market leadership this year.

Churchill executive director David Hiddleston said Churchill saw travel insurance as a growing market. "We see travel insurance as a profitable sector," he said.

Churchill-owned Indemnity Insurance is now underwriting Asda's travel insurance as of the end of last year. Elvia previously underwrote the insurance and it is understood that Churchill clinched the deal by offering better rates.

A source suggested it was "not a small book of business".

The travel sector brought together underwriting capacity and third party administration, offering a unique service to customers and corporate partners, Hiddleston said.

As of 1 January, Indemnity Insurance started underwriting for MyTravel-owned travel agencies Direct Holidays and Holiday Line.

Intergroup Insurance Services (IGIS), also owned by Churchill, will deal with claims and assistance.

Irish captive Whitehorse will continue to provide insurance for other MyTravel tour operators and travel agents.

IGIS sales and marketing director Mike Ramsay said Churchill was "working hard" and was pleased with the new business.

  • Whitehorse is launching into the direct market when its website goes live at the end of the month.

Managing director Simon Clayton said the site would be supported by a "state of the art" quote engine which had been developed in-house.

He said the engine was very specific and "the beauty is that rates are different according to each country," he said.

"We plan to provide a lot more individuals with travel insurance quotes."
