More people die of accidents in the home than are killed on the roads, according to figures from the Department of Trade and Industry.

It found that 76 people died every week in domestic accidents, compared with 66 who are killed on the roads.

Hazards in the home include fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, burns, drowning and DIY accidents.

The groups most at risk of accidents in the home are the elderly and small children.
