Abbey National Insurance is urging fans to think about their own well-being when travelling to Japan and Korea - rather than just that of the England squad.

The Foreign Office has also advised fans making the trip to the World Cup to ensure that they take out adequate travel and medical insurance, adding that "medical treatment can be very expensive in Japan".

Abbey National is advising travellers to make sure their travel insurance covers all the places they are visiting and all the activities - including motorcycling, bungee jumping and martial arts - they are likely to do on their trips.

Company spokesman Peter Jones added: "Fans should also check that their policy doesn't expire while they are away - if England get to the final, they may not be back until early July.

"Also check that there are no restrictions or conditions that apply when travelling abroad for football matches because in certain circumstances their cover can be affected."

The company says that its Travel Insurance automatically covers trips abroad for football matches.
