Company car insurers are missing out on savings of over £100m each year, according to a leading driving agency.

A study by MAC driver training claims that 70,000 accidents a year could be averted if drivers were provided with better training.

After investigating company car claims, it found that 7 out of 10 drivers admitted their driving was at fault. As a result the number of company car accidents in the UK could be reduced by over 70% each year, it said.

The study urged the government to make training more accessible by removing training VAT, and by providing trainees with tax allowances.

General manager Tom Jones said: "Seven out of ten fleet drivers admit there was something more they could have done to prevent an accident.

He added: "We need to teach drivers better observation skills and teach them to drive to the conditions of the road."

The agency also attacked the government's driving standards policy, claiming it places too much emphasis on catching speeding drivers.

Jones said: "The Government seems to have all its eggs in one speed camera basket, hoping the 'speed kills' campaign will achieve a 40% reduction in road casualties by 2010."
