New research from Swiss Re Life & Health, a UK subsidiary of reinsurer Swiss Re, shows that most employees consider conventional benefit packages to be misdirected or inappropriate.
According to the Insurance Report 2001, employees want flexible benefits packages that can be adapted for their needs and the needs of their families.
Employees now see the employer role as a combination of "provider" and "facilitator", it said.
Swiss Re Life & Health said the research also showed that despite that dissatisfaction, 65% of the employees surveyed intended to stay with their jobs, compared with only 49% in 1999, and only 6% said they intended to move jobs every few years, compared to 15% two years ago.
It said this indicated a return to the notion of "jobs for life" which could be driven by several factors, including the possible economic downturn or a period of industry consolidation where employees' career choice has become clearer.
