West Ham claim £7m for striker’s broken ankle with England

West Ham United is to claim £7m from the FA’s insurance for its striker Dean Ashton’s left ankle that was broken at his first England training session, the Times reports.

Ashton, 26, broke his ankle with England in August 2006 in a collision with Shaun Wright-Phillips, the Manchester City winger who was playing for Chelsea at the time.

Ashton could consider making an insurance claim against the FA and/or Wright-Phillips, the Times reports.

Although Ashton has managed to play since, he has been dogged by the injury and will be forced to retire this week.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
