Hundreds of people fled their homes yesterday in England and Scotland after flash floods swept across the country.

One of the owrst hit areas was Glossop, Derbyshire when the river Etherow burst its banks. Several cars were washed down the town's high street.

In West Yorkshire the Colne burst its banks and many residents in Marsden, near Huddersfield had to spend the night in a working men's club.

In Norfolk 83mm of rain fell in 24 hours, the equivalent of two month's normal rainfall.

Though Scotland saw the brunt of the storms. Electricity in Edinburgh's city centre was cut off, hitting over 50,000 houses.

A rescue operation was launched in Glasgow after 1,000 people trapped in their homes by waist deep waters.

Ten of thousands of railway passengers were left stranded. Mainline services from Glasgow's Queen Street station were halted after fears of a landslip.
