Holidaymakers should travel light and spend more time picking the right insurance.

According to research commissioned by Primary Insurance, holidaymakers are packing far too much in their luggage and often travel without proper cover for their baggage.

Roughly 6% of holidaymakers admit to not bothering with travel insurance and 10% do not have home insurance policies that could cover baggage.

If they do have home insurance policies, 27% do not have baggage cover because it is not an all-risks policy and 39% do not know if they are covered are not.

According to Primary, without proper cover holidaymakers will get a "paltry" £15 per kilo in compensation if the airline loses the luggage.

Primary offers £1,500 of cover for baggage and personal effects, with a single item limit of £250 and upto £150 for delayed baggage.

Primary says travellers should use common sense by not packing "all their wordly goods" when going on holiday.
