Empty church could have insurance withdrawn without fence

Shrewsbury Diocese wants to build a security fence around SS Peter and Paul’s presbytery in New Brighton, known to sailors as the “Dome of Home”, because of insurance concerns, the Wirral News reports.

Roman Catholic authorities closed the building in 2008.

The planning application sates: “The Diocesan insurers had also advised that if the house were to be left unoccupied for any length of time then unless it was protected from forced access and vandal damage then insurance cover was not available.”

Diocese spokesman Fr John Joyce said: “There has been no priest living there for some time, and to satisfy the insurers, we will do what is reasonably possible to secure the premises.
