Us insurance giant Liberty International will break into Ireland's domestic liability market in 2002, in response to its capacity shortage.

Liberty was based in Dublin's Financial Services Centre for the past four years, focusing on European excess casualty and liability business and financial and professional lines.

Casualty manager Neil McSherry said: "The Irish market has almost ground to a halt in terms of capacity, so the response we've received has been excellent. We just have to make sure we can keep abreast of the demand."

He said Liberty will compete with Ireland's five biggest general insurers and the London Market.
