Markel International has appointed former Gerling underwriter Peter Middleton as divisional managing director, speciality division, with effect from 5 January 2004.
Middleton was formerly chief operating officer and underwriting director for Gerling at Lloyd's. He previously worked for TIG Reinsurance, St Paul Reinsurance and Munich Re.
The appointment coincides with the renaming of the reinsurance and accident division as the speciality division, which Markel said more accurately reflected the type of business currently underwritten and the future development of the division.
The existing reinsurance and accident team will form part of the new division with Clive Couzens continuing as divisional managing director for accident and reinsurance.
