Markel International has launched a graduate trainee scheme, Markel University, to provide graduate recruits with a comprehensive introduction to the industry.

The company said 30 graduates had already been invited to attend assessment days, with more than 370 users having accessed details of the university through the Markel website.

Markel president and chief operating officer Gerry Albanese said: “This opportunity will give graduates a broad exposure to our business operations and the insurance industry.

“We are keen to hire the best graduates to help us grow and develop our business but we realise that it's often hard for people straight out of university to make the right decisions about their careers.

“A year at Markel University will give graduates a good knowledge of the insurance industry and the way that Markel operates.”

Markel said the graduate training programme would begin in October 2004 with graduates offered places within Markel once the course was completed.
