MP Ian Gibson has called for compensation for former footballers who have suffered injuries from heading the ball, it has been reported.

Gibson wants ministers and football authorities to discuss the issue of compensation following the death of former West Bromwich Albion and England forward Jeff Astle.

Last month a coroner ruled that Astle had died from a degenerative brain disease caused by heading heavy leather footballs.

Gibson, a Norwich fan, is expected to call for a response from sports minister Richard Caborn in a parliamentary debate tonight.
