Rail insurer QBE says it is not liable

QBE has said it will not be liable for the blaze that broke out on a derailed freight train in Scotland on Tuesday.

The insurer recently announced a six-year contract with Network Rail, brokered by Aon, to provide capacity on property and liability risks.

But Network Rail also operates a captive, which is expected to cover this loss.

The train was carrying kerosene and diesel when it hit a pylon while crossing a bridge in Stewarton, East Ayrshire. Six of the 10 wagons came off the rails and some caught fire. No injuries were reported.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
