Loss adjusters have slammed Bedfordshire Police for refusing to deal with fraud investigations.

This means loss adjusters will have to play the role of the police to combat vehicle fraud in one of the country's highest crime areas.

Claims Management & Adjusting director Philip Swift said he gave Bedfordshire police "the perfect fraud on a plate". But he said they told him: "It's a great case, but we are not allowed to deal with it."

Swift said: "The ability of insurers to secure evidence will be more difficult, if not impossible."

A police spokesman said: "Our fraud squad deals with lower level fraud and some is screened out immediately. The serious fraud squad run by the Metropolitan Police deals with higher-level cases."
