The government has released a consultation paper on implementing the Fourth Motor Insurance Directive.

The paper details proposals to make it easier for someone resident in one EU Member State, who suffers loss or injury caused by a driver in another Member State they are visiting, to pursue a claim against the insurer.

The economic secretary to the Treasury, Ruth Kelly, commented: "These proposals would reduce the stress and time involved in pursuing an insurance claim for UK residents who are victims of motor accidents when visiting another EU Member State. I look forward to receiving responses from all interested parties."

The consultation period on the proposals runs until 17 July 2002.
