Kay Pysden has left insurance law firm Davies Lavery, along with her existing division, to found a niche Marine and Transit law practice.
Davies Lavery said Pysden's departure had been a mutual agreement.
The new company will trade as Pysdens and will operate from offices in Fenchurch Street, London.
Davies Lavery said it will continue to concentrate on its other core insurance and corporate and commercial specialisms.
The company said it wished Pysdens a successful future.
