Insurer Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) is hesitating over whether to endorse the government's builders' quality mark scheme because it thinks its own vetting process is better, Building magazine reported today.
This comes after the government recently put pressure on insurers to only use contractors approved with the quality mark for repair work.
R&SA's chief surveyor, Steve Sampson, said: "Until the quality mark is a proven success we will not back a potential loser. Our contractors currently have to be proved competent through our own eight-month vetting process that is more stringent than the quality mark."
However, a DTI spokesperson commented that the accreditation standards demanded by the government scheme are "the most comprehensive in the market".
R&SA is expected to make a final decision on joining the scheme this summer.
