Investigators from the Art Loss Register have successfully returned this missing oil painting to its rightful owner, after it appeared in a catalogue for a New York auction house.

The painting, entitled Major Henry Bullock on his bay hunter, disappeared from a London art gallery in March 1977.

The 37cm by 48cm panel is signed by the artist John Frederick Herring and is dated 1834.

It was insured with Equitas, the Lloyd's rrunn-off vehicle for pre-1992 liabilities, for between £16,000 and £23,000.

The painting was spotted by ALR investigators in January and has since been restituted to its owner.
