Insurer says failure to wear seatbelt invalidate claims

Europ Assistance is refusing to repatriate British teenager Dicken Richards, (18) who suffered a head injury in France because he was not wearing a seatbelt and in an overloaded car, the Times reports.

A spokeswoman: “As is standard with all travel insurance policies, exclusions apply to any claims that relate to a customer being involved in any malicious, reckless, illegal or criminal act. Specifically, Mr Richards was not wearing a seatbelt, as required by law.”

Richards’ travel companion Ben Crozier, 19, was killed in the accident.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
